Thanasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios with the 2022 Australian Open trophy
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis claim their first-ever Grand Slam title as the pair defeated compatriots Max Purcell and Matthew Ebden in the finals of the 2022 Australian Open. The ‘K&K’ became the first wildcard pair to win the Australian Open Men’s Doubles as they won the match 7-5, 6-4 in 1 hour and 35 minutes in front of the packed Rod Laver Arena that was roaring throughout as it was an all-Australian final.
Nick and Thanasi hit 6 aces, 17 winners in a disciplined performance having 1 unforced error and 1 double fault as they won 75 points in the finals. Max and Matthew from the other side of the court had 3 aces, 28 winners and had 1 double fault and 7 unforced errors during the match as they finished with 62 points.
“You’ve matured Thanasi. I don’t want to repeat too much what Thanasi said, this week has been a dream come true and I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else. Max has been to the finals twice I believe and he’s a hell of a doubles player and Matty has had a hell of a career. I’m just super happy, I don’t know how are we doing this what’s going on right now to be brutally honest.
“Just everyone else, everyone who came. It’s been a tough couple of years I had Covid a week before the Aussie Open and my team I wouldn’t have been here without you guys and my beautiful girlfriend. She looked after me as well. This big boy is going to be out tonight so ladies, let’s go. I’m stopping now, I have crossed the line,” said an elated Kyrgios as the crowd burst out laughing.
Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis dropped only 2 sets on the way to the finals

The pair of Kyrgios and Kokkinakis dropped only 2 sets during the entire Grand Slam they played and took down big seeds throughout the tournament. Having come into the tournament as wildcard entrants, not many expected them to win the title but the childhood friends made the impossible, possible.
“Wow, what a week. First of all, I would like to congratulate Max and Mat. Hell of opponents, great doubles pairing, great guys, it was a super tough match but a great week for them. Secondly, Nick, I love you brother. We did not expect to come close to this but with the help of you guys all week, it was unbelievable. With the coverage we got and the support we got, we could not ask for anything more.
“Thanks to my team its been a rough couple of years for me the last few years but what a month we had, I could not ask for anything more. Coming into the Aussie Open I was already happy and this is a crazy cherry on top. So thanks for all the work, thank you. I am going to shut up soon but thank you Craig and everyone who made this tournament possible.
“Glad to say it is the best tournament of the year the atmosphere, the crowd, for everyone in the world, you guys such high standards and I would love to come back so thank you,” said Thanasi during the on-court interview.
