Alexander Zverev has been in splendid form at the current 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. The big German started off his campaign in Monaco with a brilliant win against Federico Delbonis and then backed it off with another superb win against Pablo Carreno Busta. He has now progressed to the quarterfinals and feels that attack is the best option if one has to win titles.

Zverev won 6-2, 7-5 against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the third-round clash. The 24-year-old had some loss of concentration and hence the second set was very tight but he came back to form in the nick of time to bag the match in straight sets. He admitted that he was a little off in the second set but was happy to win the match in straight sets.

“For the second clay-court match of the season, I can’t complain too much,” he said. “Yes, I have lost focus a little bit in the second set, but at the end of the day, he’s somebody that can really play. I’m happy with a two-set win.”

The World No. 3 has won five Masters 1000 titles and is aiming for yet another in Monaco as he really has a great opportunity at hand. Players like Rafael Nadal, Matteo Berrettini and Daniil Medvedev did not participate for various reasons whereas players like Carlos Alcaraz and World No. 1 Novak Djokovic have crashed out of the tournament in the opening rounds. Lately, Andrey Rublev also bowed out of the Monte Carlo Masters only helping the cause of the big German.

The 24-year-old had won 79 per cent of his first-serve points compared to just 57 per cent for his opponent. He claimed the Monte Carlo clay surface to be a bit slower than other clay court surfaces around the globe. “It’s great, because especially on a clay court, especially here where it’s a little bit slower I think than other clay courts that we play on, it is very important to get that confidence going on your serve,” said Zverev, who hit eight aces and converted five of 14 break points during his victory. “All around, it’s important to get these kinds of wins.”

Zverev has been very aggressive in both the matches at the current event and feels that it is the only way for him to win a title. “To win the biggest tournaments in the world, like Masters Series, like Grand Slams, you have to be aggressive. I am not going to win big titles just by pushing the ball.”

The 24-year-old will face inform Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters. Sinner defeated Rublev in the last round and will look to do the same against the German.
