Iga Swiatek‘s victory at the WTA-1000 Qatar Open 2022 in Doha not only brought her second career WTA-1000 title but also saw her rise 4 places to reach her career-high rank of World No. 4 once again. The win in Doha was Iga’s first title of the season having reached the semi-finals in two tournaments earlier but failed to make her way to the finals.
Iga started her season at the WTA-500 Adelaide International 2022 where she was defeated by World No. 1 and eventual champion Ash Barty in the semi-finals. The Pole next played at the 2022 Australian Open where she reached the semi-finals in Melbourne Park for the first time but lost in the semis once again to eventual runner-up Danielle Collins this time.
Swiatek voices support for Ukraine
Newly crowned Qatar Open champion Iga Swiatek voiced her support to the people of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion, saying she found it hard to picture a conflict in the country next to her’s.
The Polish tennis player is against the war, which affects innocent people and children. Swiatek has decided to somehow support the Ukrainians. The athlete will perform at the tournament in Indian Wells with a ribbon of flowers in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Iga added that her team will have a lot of ribbons, so anyone can also join in such a small but touching gesture.
“I am against this war and the suffering of innocent people. I want to show, even if symbolically, my solidarity with Ukraine, so I’m going to play my matches in Indian Wells with a small ribbon in the colors of the Ukrainian flag. If other players feel able to support Ukraine with this symbolic gesture, we prepared more of these ribbons and can give you some,” revealed Swiatek.
The Polish tennis player also admitted that she was pleasantly surprised by the courage of the Ukrainian people and the army of Ukraine, who have shown no signs of giving up against the Russians.
“I admire the strength and courage of the Ukrainians and I am proud of the Poles, who provide great assistance to Ukrainians, open their homes and support refugees at the borders. Helping the victims is our first response. Help is needed and will probably be needed in the future, so it is important to support public organizations that have many years of experience in humanitarian crises,” added the Pole.
