WTA Italian Open 2021 Final: Iga Swiatek drops a double bagel on Karolina Pliskova; clinches second title of the year

Iga Swiatek clinched the third title of her season at the Italian Open 2021, as she thrashed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets in the final on Sunday. The Polish teenager dropped a double bagel on the Czech player, winning 6-0, 6-0. Karolina Pliskova was making her third consecutive final appearance in Rome, and was also the defending champion.
Iga Swiatek will now compete at the French Open 2021, which commences later this month. The 19-year old lifted the French Open title last year, after she defeated Sofia Kenin in the finals. Swiatek has been in mesmerizing form this week in Rome, and dropped just one set throughout the campaign.
Iga Swiatek storms past Karolina Pliskova
Iga Swiatek dominated Karolina Pliskova right from the onset. The Polish teenager served brilliantly throughout the match, and had a first serve accuracy of 93%. On the other hand, Karolina Pliskova’s serve was way off the radar, and she served four double faults during the whole match.
In another surprising stat, Karolina Pliskova won just 17% of her points on second serve, as compared to Swiatek’s tally of 85%. The youngster took most of her chances, and converted 6 of her eight break point opportunities, whereas, Pliskova failed to convert any of her two chances.
Iga Swiatek won 51 points during the whole match, whereas, Pliskova could manage to win just 13 points. It was a really disappointing performance from the defending champion, as she failed to live up to her standards in the final.
