Iga Swiatek opens up on her ‘most important’ goal this season
Iga Swiatek
Iga Swiatek broke into the top 10 rankings of the WTA Rankings, after claiming the Italian Open 2021 title. The Polish teenager has two WTA titles in her bag so far this season. The 19-year old will now aim to defend her title at the French Open 2021. Last year, she lifted the title in Paris after dominating her opponents in some fashion.
Women’s tennis is certainly at one of it’s peak moments at the moment. Going into a tournament, there is no outright favorite. Moreover, there have been 12 winners in the last 16 Grandslam tournaments. She believes that to be a defending champion in Paris is a tough task, because of the cut-throat competition.
“It’s hard to be defending champion for sure, especially in women’s tennis – I think with all the champions we kind of lack a consistency for a little bit,” Swiatek said. The Polish teenager also stated that she is trying to improve her game on hard courts, and wishes to win the Wimbledon at some time in the future.
“I think it would be nice to win another Grand Slam because I know I can play on clay court but for the past few years I was trying to improve my game on hard courts, and it’s going pretty well and it would be a nice confirmation to me that I’m doing a great job,” said Swiatek.
“But also winning on grass would be pretty crazy for me because even though I won junior Wimbledon [in 2018], I still don’t understand that surface very well, so that would be really crazy but I would love to win Wimbledon,” she added.
Iga Swiatek targets the Tokyo Olympics
Iga Swiatek has also set her sights on the Tokyo Olympics to be held later this year. The 19-year old believes that Olympics is her biggest goal for this season. “For me it’s a very important goal for this year,” she says. “For sure [having an Olympian dad] changed my perspective because when I was younger I heard stories of his experience there,” said the Pole.
Iga Swiatek also hopes that her father will be in the box cheering for her in the upcoming tournaments. However, covid-19 restrictions might not make it possible for her father to support her from the stands.
“I hope he is going to be there but because of Covid it’s hard to have as many people around you at tournaments, but his experience for sure would help so we are going to try and see how we’re going to handle that,” said Swiatek.
