Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, a long-time French tennis star, revealed on Wednesday that he will retire after this year’s French Open. In his career, the former World No. 5 won 18 titles and reached the final of the Australian Open, as well as the semi-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon.
Tsonga is one of three players who have won Grand Slam tournaments over tennis’ “Big Four” of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray. He was also a silver medallist in doubles at the 2012 Olympics.
“Took me a long time to make this decision”- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Tsonga has struggled with injuries in recent years and claimed only his second win since 2019 in February after missing almost the entire 2020 season with a back injury and posting a 1-8 record last year. The Frenchman said it “took me a long time to make this decision”.
“A few weeks ago I decided I was going to stop at Roland Garros this year. My body is telling me ‘you can’t go any further than what I give you’, “ Jo-Wilfried Tsonga unveiled in a video posted on Instagram.
“I decided that I had to stop at a moment that I chose, a moment when I was able to go on the court. I have always set myself high goals to try to get what I can. For me, this will be the opportunity to do it one last time,” the 36-year old added further.
