Since the start of the Russian-Ukraine crisis, World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev has entirely been on the side of ‘No War’ and ‘global peace.’ Having played against Rafael Nadal in the Mexican Open semi-finals and getting himself enough points to overtake the 20-time grand slam champion, Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev grabbed the position of World No. 1. However, the happiness couldn’t last long as that day marked the start of the Russian invasion in Ukraine, triggering a global crisis shaking every citizen of the earth to its core.

Russia launched an attack this month on Ukraine, claiming the lives of hundreds of civilians and soldiers, multiple prominent figures to come out in the open, voicing their protest against the war.

As an international tennis player, going on tours and playing against people from different nationalities, Medvedev talks about how difficult it is to see his homeland and a neighboring country going on war like this. “We play in so many different countries. I’ve been in so many different countries as a junior and as a pro. It’s just not easy to hear all this news. I’m all for peace.”

“By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world,” says the 26-year old Russian player after seeing all the posts against war and for world peace. “In this moment, you understand that tennis sometimes is not that important,” he said. Although Medvedev had just experienced the greatest moment of his career, he couldn’t ignore the glaring reality in front of him.

The Russian confessed that during his matches against Yoshihito Nishioka, he seemed distracted because of his homeland crisis and the safety of the Ukrainians. “It was definitely not easy to play, and I am happy that I managed to win the match. That was a little bit of a roller-coaster day.”

Even though all Russian and Ukrainian tennis players have equally protested against the war, Russian players alone are being targeted by the Tennis Federation of Ukraine. International Tennis Federation had proposed to ban all Russian players from competing in any individual or team event. This would ultimately hinder Daniil Medvedev’s journey as World No. 1.
