The 2022 Australian Open is around the corner and players have geared up for the same. The build up around it has been unreal despite all the controversies surrounding it. World No.4 Stefanos Tsitsipas will step on to the court once again to better his semifinal outing from last year. He will also go in as one of the contenders to win the title.

Off late, Tsitsipas hasn’t been in great form and has struggled with injuries. He pulled out of the ATP Finals towards the end of last year and didn’t have the best of ATP Cup last week. He didn’t play the first match for Greece and lost to Diego Schwartzman in his first match of the season. He then pulled out mid-match against Nikoloz Basilashvili despite leading 4-1 in the first set.

In the pre-tournament press conference, Tsitsipas gave an update about his injury and said that he is very close to 100% fitness and is well prepared for the first grand slam of the year.

“I Have recovered very close to 100%. My preparation is going well. I have been practicing with plenty of good players the last couple of days. I have faith that it’s good enough for me to compete at best-of-five,” he said.

Recently, Netflix announced that it would be making a docuseries in tennis around the 4 majors and various tournaments throughout the year. The series will be very similar to that Netflix has done with F1- Drive to Survive. Tsitsipas expressed his excitement about the same and said that he had no doubts signing up for it.

“I’m very privileged to be in it. I’m extremely happy they’re bringing this to tennis and making something similar in that sense. I had no doubts about sign up for it. It’s one of the best shows out there,” Tsitsipas said.

Over the last two weeks, all eyes have been on Novak Djokovic. The Serbian superstar has been once again detained by the Australian government on account of ‘public safety’. Tsitsipas a few days ago said that Djokovic is making every vaccinated tennis player ‘look like fool’.

In the press conference, he said that Djokovic’s situation has received a lot of undue attention and not enough tennis is being talked about. He at last said that he’s here to talk about tennis and not Djokovic.

“It has been pretty much on every news outlet last couple of weeks. It has received a lot of attention. A lot of people are obviously talking about it. That’s why I’m here to talk about tennis. Not enough tennis has been talked about last couple of weeks, which is a shame. I’m here to talk about tennis, not Novak Djokovic,” Tsitsipas said.

Tsitsipas is placed in the bottom half of the draw and will open his campaign on Tuesday against Mikael Ymer of Sweden.
