Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens is an American professional tennis player. Her current ranking according to the WTA is World No.57 and her highest ranking was World No.3. The 28-year-old made a much-awaited comeback at the Australian Open after a long absence, where she performed poorly and went out in the first round of the tournament to an admittedly tough opponent in Emma Raducanu.

However, she made an admirable comeback at the WTA Guadalajara Open, having reached the semi-finals of the tournament and was supposed to play Anna Kalinskaya on Sunday.

After notable players such as Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev spoke on the matter and Dayana Yastremska shared her personal traumatic experience, Sloane Stephens has now become the latest player to voice her opinion on the situation currently in Ukraine.

The Vladimir Putin-led Russian government launched a military operation in Ukraine this week, with the move threatening to have bigger consequences around the world. In this situation, Sloane Stephens has come out in the support of the people of Ukraine, hoping that the issue can be resolved peacefully and things return to normalcy.

“I’m horrified by the invasion of Ukraine and am praying for peaceful resolution and lasting safety for its citizens and for the world.”- said Stephens on the topic.

Like Sloane, there are many other prominent personalities that have voiced their opinions and concerns with regard to this global battle. Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev came out in support of Ukraine this week despite being Russians, ultimately wanting peace instead of war.

There have been widespread criticisms of the move by Putin to invade Ukraine, as war is never the option. Whichever country wins the battle, it’s the common people who lose the war. The potential war would not only affect the two countries but potentially the whole week world in some form or the other.
