The defending champion at the 2022 Australian Open, Naomi Osaka, went down in 3-sets to World No. 60 Amanda Anisimova as the young American defeated the former World No. 1 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) in 2 hours and 15 minutes in front of a roaring crowd on the Margaret Court Arena.

This was Naomi’s first defeat of the year as she was 5-0 before coming into the match and given Amanda’s inconsistent form, not many expected the youngster to slay the hardcourt giant Osaka. Amanda however made the best use of her form as she was 7-0 coming into the tie having won the Tour title in Melbourne earlier. Amanda also saved 2 match points against Osaka before winning the tiebreaker.

“Definitely, I think I fought for every point and I can’t be sad about that. I’m not God. I can’t win every match. So I just have to take that into account and know that it would be nice to win the tournament but that’s, like, really special. I think the pace of her ball surprised me, but other than that it was fun to play.

“I know there are days I’m going to have bad days and days I’m going to have great days. It’s always random, and I never know. But no matter what happens for me, I know I want to leave the court knowing that I’ve fought for every point. Today there were things I thought I could improve in, but even with that I had two match points and even with that it is something I can be proud of myself for,” said Osaka during her post-match press conference.

“Losses is what I learn the most from”: Naomi Osaka

Osaka did not reveal where will her fans be catching her next. However, with 2 months of hardcourt action scheduled in February and March, Naomi should be present there before the Tour shifts its focus to Clay court, something Naomi has not been comfortable with. With a week at her hands to decide, an announcement about her next tournament should follow soon.

“For me, I just want to go into this year, like, knowing that I’ll play the whole year and I’ll just have, like, the greatest attitude ever. You know, like I’ll fight for every point. Even if I win or lose, I’ll just go off the court knowing that I tried the hardest that I could, and there is no way that anyone can expect anything more from me, because they saw, like, how hard I fought.

“So of course, that’s the goal, and I think if I keep that mentality, I’ll be able to win more matches, of course. There is going to be moments like this where I’m disappointed, but I feel like the losses is what I learn the most from,” added Naomi in her final press conference in Melbourne Park this year.
