Soon to be World No. 1, Iga Swiatek continues to take down opponents without breaking a sweat. The Pole was up against 2-time Wimbledon champion and former World No. 2 Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open 2022 and won the match comfortably with a 6-3, 6-3 win in 1 hour and 17 minutes.

The win takes Iga to her 15th consecutive win with the streak that started in the 2022 Qatar Open in Doha and has continued into her third consecutive WTA-1000 tournament. With two WTA-1000 titles already on the trot, Iga is just 2 wins away from winning a hattrick of the biggest Tour titles having already joined Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka and Jelena Ostapenko as the only players to have made four or more WTA 1000 semifinals before their 21st birthdays

“I want to use the confidence that I built since the beginning of Doha. I think I’m on a roll and I want to use that. Having that kind of streak got pretty tricky, but I’m pretty glad that I could play well, that I’m healthy, and that I can compete against players like Petra. She’s a legend.

“From the beginning, I knew that I had to keep up with the pace because she plays really fast. I wanted to stay low on my legs and the first serve was the key. I don’t know if I had many winners, but I wanted to build up positive energy from her mistakes. I’m glad that I stayed focused and I did the tactics from A to Z,” said Iga post her win over Kvitova in the press conference as she becomes the first player since Karolina Pliskova in 2017 to reach back-to-back semis in Indian Wells and Miami.

Iga is one of the active players in both singles and doubles disciplines. The 20-year old has however decided to not play in the Doubles events this year in order to remain fresher for the singles matches where she aims to cement her place at the top of the rankings. Iga’s best doubles result came in the 2021 French Open when she finished as the runner-up, her only doubles finals appearance.

“I learned a lot from each tournament I won, there was always a lot of work behind it, I would even say that I worked more after winning tournaments compared to others where I lost, although we all know that the normal thing in tennis is to lose every week, I’m used to that. I feel ready to manage this, we are still at the beginning of the season.

“We will see what happens towards the end when we are all tired, then the management will be more complicated. This year, for example, I will not be playing doubles, which will allow me to have more days off,” said Swiatek further. Iga will now take on Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals with Pegula coming into the match with a walkover from Paula Badosa before their quarter-final match.
