The 17-year-old American tennis star, Gauff, is the youngest player to be ranked in the top 100 by the WTA and has a career high of World No. 16 in singles. Gauff has had a hit or miss season so far. She started off in Adelaide where she lost the round of 16 against Ashleigh Barty in the first tournament. In the second one, she reached the semi-finals where she fell to Madison Keys. She had a first round exit at the Australian Open this year. In the following tournament in Dubai as well she lost her first match. At her previous tournament in Qatar, she regained her form and reached the quarter-finals. She lost against sixth-seed Maria Sakkari. She will enter this tourament in good shape and state of mind.
Liu, on the other hand, has had a terrible start to the season. She began her campaign in Sydney, where she failed to go past the qualifying stages. She subsequently lost her first round match in the Australian Open. The American did not qualify for the two consecutive tournaments she had previously competed in, the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Qatar Open. After a difficult start in which she lost all of her matches, the 21-year-old has broken through to the second round at Indian Wells. She defeated Viktoriya Tomova in the round of 128 in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
