Rafael Nadal vs Taylor Fritz

21-time grand slam champion and fourth seed Rafael Nadal will square off against twentieth seed Taylor Fritz in the 2022 Indian Wells Masters finals. Defending champion Cameron Norrie, unfortunately, couldn’t make it past the quarterfinals, losing to 18-year old Carlos Alcaraz Garcia, who later was overwhelmed by the fellow Spaniard Nadal.

The Indian Wells Masters is one of the most anticipated and significant tournaments after the four major grand slams. Called the 5th Grand Sla of tennis, it is a historic event on the Tour. While Nadal is a 3-time former champion, Fritz is looking for his first title at the tournament having reached the semis for the first time in the last edition.

A player who no one thought would be able to make it this far, having incurred a major injury last year, forcing him into a six-month-long hiatus. Nadal overcame all odds in 2022, winning the Melbourne Summer Set 1, Australian Open, and the Mexican Open, breaking the 21-grand slam record and running a streak of 20-0 matches won throughout the entire season.

And now, in the Indian Wells, the 35-year old Spaniard faced one tall hurdle after another, starting with Sebastian Korda in the second round followed by Dan Evans, seventeenth seed Reilly Opelka and the controversial match against Nick Kyrgios. In the semifinals, Nadal faced Carlos Alcaraz, defeating the youngster in three sets ( 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 ).

Although Taylor Fritz didn’t win any title since the start of this year, he has made a lot of progress, raising his rank to World No. 16; his career-high, and making it to the quarterfinals of the Dallas Open. This week, in the BNP Paribas Open, the 24-year old prevailed over seventh seed Andrey Rublev ( 7-5, 6-4 ) in the semifinals and now standing on the final stage to possibly win his first title of the year.
