Carlos Alcaraz sent shock waves across the tennis world when, on Wednesday (December 17), he announced on social media that he had split with his coach of seven years, Juan Carlos Ferrero. The decision to end the partnership following his most successful season was considered “weird”, while Rafael Nadal‘s uncle Toni Nadal thought it would have been “logical” had Ferrero stayed.
Reactions one after the other in the aftermath of the end of the partnership have started to pour in. Then there are various speculations about the possible reasons behind the separation. Alcaraz’s agent, Albert Molina, is the ‘villain’ here as per some sections of the tennis community, because an agent usually handles stuff related to contracts.
According to Marca, there were certain clauses in the new contract that Ferrero disagreed with. He was given just 48 hours to accept or reject the contract extension. His salary was also reduced, but that was not the major cause of concern. Now, CLAY has reported that a source, very close to Alcaraz, revealed to them that the relationship between Alcaraz’s father, Carlos Alcaraz Gonzalez, and Ferrero was already deteriorating.
What happened is very simple. The contract was annual. The 2025 contract ended at the end of November, and they waited until Saturday, the 13th of this month, to present a new one and until Monday, the 15th, at the first hour to sign it. Juan Carlos did not accept it, and they did not want to make any changes.

Another report published by CLAY stated that the source revealed to them that Alcaraz’s father and Ferreo also had disagreements about how to handle the 22-year-old’s career.
There were major disagreements between Ferrero and Alcaraz’s father about how to manage the player’s career.

Ferreo joined the Alcaraz team about six years after calling time on his career in 2012. Alcaraz was just 15 when he started to work with the 45-year-old who guided his now ex-protege to the No.1 ranking, 24 tour-level titles, including his six Majors. Ferrero won the ATP Coach of the Year in 2022 and this year, while Alcaraz won the ATP Player of the Year the same two years.
Flavio Cobolli on training with Carlos Alcaraz
World No.22 Flavio Cobolli finished the season with a 34-27 win-loss record, winning his career’s first two titles, lifting them at the Romanian Open and the Hamburg European Open by defeating Sebastian Baez and Andrey Rublev, respectively. Although the Italian tennis ace finally added tour-level titles to his trophy cabinet, he knows that a great deal of work still needs to be done. So practicing with Carlos Alcaraz definitely helped him know more about the aspect of his game that needs improvement.

The two hours of training with Alcaraz seem like 20′, when you do them with some other player, it seems like two hours. He is obviously giving me a lot of advice, and even if he doesn’t tell me, I learn it.
Flavio Cobolli told Ubitennis
Alcaraz has met the 23-year-old just once and won that match. They faced off in the first round of the 2023 Roland Garros, where Alcaraz won the match in straight sets.
In Grand Slam events, Cobolli produced his best performance this year. He made it to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon, where 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic knocked him out in four sets.
Alcaraz lifted eight titles from 11 finals this year. Apart from the French Open and the US Open, Alcaraz also took home three Masters 1000 titles, which he won at the Monte Carlo Masters, Italian Open, and the Cincinnati Masters.
