World No. 102 Nick Kyrgios is enjoying his time on the court as he is putting consistent performances and taking out higher-ranked opponents at will. The Australian had a poor season in 2021 marred with injuries and low motivation which was later revealed to be clinical depression of which Nick has been open about in order to spread awareness about it.
Nick hoped to return to full-time action this season but a bout of Covid-19 stopped him from starting his season early. He played his first match of the season in the 2022 Australian Open winning in front of his home crowd before going out in the second round not without impressing the crowd with his shots and play. Nick went on to however win the Doubles title with childhood mate Thanasi Kokkinakis and has been on a high since then.
As tennis has also partnered up with Netflix for a docu-series about the entire season (similar to Netflix’s F1 show Drive to Survive), Nick was on board with the decision and the reason showed the maturity of the Australian.
“They were very interested in following me everywhere and I know that if I really got involved it was because I think the culture of tennis is changing. Tennis is a privileged sport that remains very white. So I loved being able to show my path and how I go about it and especially how I connect with people. I think that’s a very different aspect of how people perceive most tennis players.
“I think it’s something special for other athletes of colour who want to play tennis to see me. You have Tiafoe there right now, Osaka, we do it the way we do. I think it’s cool, it’s a great idea for the sport. To develop tennis, it was definitely necessary,” said Kyrgios as reported by Welovetennis.

Currently playing at the 2022 Miami Masters, with three consecutive straight-set victories that had only 1 tiebreaker in them, Nick is into the 4th round and a win away from reaching the quarter-finals having reached the last-8 in the 2022 Indian Wells Masters as well only to be defeated by eventual runner-up Rafael Nadal in what was arguably one of the best matches of the season on the Tour.
Nick will now take on Jannik Sinner in the 4th round in Miami looking for his 8th win of the season in what will be his first meeting with the Italian youngster who was praised by Nick earlier in the season for his talent and gameplay that impressed the Australian.
