“It is an additional motivation” Daniil Medvedev not ‘feeling pressured’ on being 1 win away from World No. 1 spot

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev is into the quarter-finals of the 2022 Miami Masters after he took down local lad Jenson Brooksby who has been turning heads every time he steps on to the court. Medvedev won the match 7-5, 6-1 after being pushed on the ropes as he was 3-5 down in the first set but controlled it well to wrap it up quickly in the second set.
The win takes Medvedev into his second quarter-final appearance at the Miami Masters, his best run at the tournament so far in his career. He also now moves 1 match away from reclaiming the World No. 1 spot from Novak Djokovic who despite being inactive became the top-ranked player after Medvedev had a 3-round exit from the Indian Wells Masters last week.
A run to the semi-final will be enough for Daniil to move to the top once again having stayed there for just 2 weeks between the events in Indian Wells and Miami. As many would feel pressure to win this particular match, the US Open champ feels otherwise and is using the pressure as a motivating factor instead.
“At the moment I don’t feel any pressure, what I feel is extra motivation to try and succeed. This is a big goal that I want to achieve. I already knew that if I reached the semi‐finals, I would be number one in the world. It’s great to have this opportunity. I only have one game left and of course, the pressure can appear in the middle of the game, depending on how the score develops. If I win 5-0, then no, but if I’m in a tie-break, maybe yes, but now this goal is an additional motivation,” said Daniil in the press conference after his win over Jenson.
“I knew it was not going to be an easy match” Daniil Medvedev impressed by Jenson Brooksby
Despite the win, Medvedev was full of praise for the youngster who came to the limelight with his exploits in the last season’s US Open series. Daniil talked about what changed the match for him in his favour and what does he think of Jenson in the near future.
“Jenson has the potential to be a top player. He is really good and plays better than his ranking. I knew it was not going to be an easy match. I had no solutions at the beginning. The crucial moment was when I managed to make him serve for the set and he got a little bit tight and I played a bit better,” said Medvedev after the match.
The hurdle for Medvedev will now be defending champion Hubert Hurkacz who will look to claim his second win against Daniil while the Russian will look to make a hattrick of wins and keep a positive winning rate against the Pole.
