Back in the Top-3 of the ATP rankings, Rafael Nadal was unfortunate to not make it with a trophy as he lost in the finals of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters to Taylor Fritz. Fritz became the first American since Andre Agassi in 2001 to win the Indian Wells title as the 24-year old defeated Nadal 6-3, 7-6(5).

The defeat also ended Nadal’s winning streak of 20 matches since the start of the season having won 3 titles during the period including the 2022 Australian Open. Having already decided that post-Indian Wells, he would play directly on Clay, the Spaniard wished to take home his 4th title of the season but it was not his day.

However, the Spaniard too was struggling with an injury during the match, having received treatment on court in visible pain. Post the match, he revealed the excruciating pain he was in during the match, unable to even breathe.

“I don’t know if it’s something in the ribs, I don’t know yet. When I breathe and when I move it’s like I have a needle inside all the time. It makes me feel a little dizzy because it’s painful. It’s a kind of pain that limits me a lot. It’s not just because of the pain: I don’t feel very good because it affects my breathing,” revealed Nadal.

The Spanish star revealed that the problems breathing affected his game, limiting him during the important match. He stated that breathing during that time was very painful and uncomfortable.

“All I can say is that breathing is difficult for me. I don’t know, when I try breathing is painful and very uncomfortable,” he added.
