World No. 3 Alexander Zverev had a poor outing at the 2022 Australian Open when many expected it to be a golden chance for the German to clinch his first Grand Slam title. Had he won the major, Zverev would have also become the new World No. 1 but things did not go well for Sascha who lost in the 4th round in a straight-set defeat to Denis Shapovalov.

After his disappointing loss at the Australian Open 2022, Alexander Zverev accepted a wildcard into the ATP 250 Montpellier Open on short notice to redeem himself. However, despite not dropping a set in the tournament till then, the German fell to Alexander Bublik in straight sets in the final of the tournament is yet another disappointing outcome.

His brother Mischa recently spoke in an interview of his brother’s inability to perform in the big moments. At the Australian Open, Zverev had an incredible opportunity to usurp Nova Djokovic as the World No.1 had he won the tournament, but ultimately fell short. According to his brother, the reason for Zverev’s failure is putting a lot of pressure on himself due to wanting to do well so badly.

“He put a lot of pressure on himself. He wanted it so badly that it was his own undoing. He played outstandingly at the ATP Finals in Turin. In the final against Daniil Medvedev he was clearly superior.”– said Mischa.

He also went on to say that his brother had gotten trapped in a vicious cycle, saying that competing at Melbourne on such a high level after an off-season is really difficult. Zverev thus kept thinking that something is missing in his preparations ahead of the tournament, and it became a vicious cycle.

“When you arrive in Melbourne after the off-season, you can’t feel as good as you do at the end of the season. This is perfectly normal. Sascha really wanted to play better and better. At some point he got into a stressful situation that he wanted to do everything even better. But the feeling only comes when it comes. Sometimes it takes a day, sometimes ten days, sometimes two or three weeks. He never had that perfect feel for his entire game in Melbourne. He always had the feeling that something was missing. It was a vicious circle from which he could not free himself,”- he added.
