Despite being just 33, del Potro will be forced to retire as the once superstar’s career has been eaten by injuries for some time now, a decision that might finally allow him to live his life pain-free. His comeback match was against Federico Delbonis at the ATP Argentina Open, where he lost in straight sets.

After coming back from a long-time injury, the fans were excited to witness del Potro’s last hurrah at Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. However, despite that being the hope, the official Twitter account of the Rio Open sadly announced that the big Argentine has pulled out of the tournament. With this, it is likely that del Potro would retire from the sport as had been iterated in his statement before the start of the ATP Argentina Open.

In their official statement, Rio Open expressed their sadness at the development and stated that it was always a dream to have someone like del Potro compete at their tournament, and reiterated that the former World No.4 would always be welcome at the tournament in the future.

“Juan Martin Del Potro, unfortunately, will not compete in the Rio Open. It was always a dream to have him with us and we came very close to being able to fulfill it. We wish you much success in the future and know that the doors of the Rio Open will always be open to you, @delpotrojuan”– said Rio Open on Twitter.

The fans had undoubtedly been excited to see del Potro for the last time at Rio de Janeiro after his first-round exit against Federico Delbonis at Buenos Aires, but would now hope that the legend has a happy retirement after his persistent injury problems.
