Andy Murray expressed his sadness over Juan Martin del Potro’s early retirement. The 2009 US Open champion had been one of the greatest players in the past two decades.
The Argentine with his gum forehand had the ability to defeat any opponent on his day. He was one of the few players who managed to constantly not only compete against but beat the Big three.
del Potro had a great rivalry with Murray as well, both previous grand slam winners had been suffering from injuries and have made surprising comebacks throughout their careers.

Juan Martin del Potro decided to end his tennis career after suffering from a knee injury which started to affect his personal life as well. He played his last match at the Argentina Open in front of his home crowd.
The 2009 US Open champ and two-time Olympics champion was one of the greats of the game and he was one of the few players who were able to compete against the big three and defeat them in major matches.
Andy Murray was another player in that list and he expressed his saddness on del Potro’s decision to end his career. In a recent interview he said, “He’s obviously been struggling for a really long time, I’m aware of what it’s like to be in that position where you’re running out of options and things to rehab.”
“He was always competing with the top players, always very dangerous. As a player he had a power that very few guys on the tour have ever had. He was really popular all around the world, people loved watching him play. It’s really sad and I hope he’s OK.” Murray added.
In the end Murray said, “He was a very intelligent player which I don’t think gets spoken about much. He had issues with his wrist for a number of years and had to adapt the way he was playing, used a lot of slice backhands, and was still very competitive with the best players in the world even with that issue.”
