World No.120 Jenson Brooksby has been grabbing the headlines on the tour lately as he takes leap strides forward in his tennis career. The young American who is competing in his first ATP 500 tournament this week in Washington also managed to capture the attention of former World No.1 Andy Murray with his impressive style of play.

The 20-year-old has already beaten big names in John Millman, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Frances Tiafoe and Kevin Anderson at the ongoing Citi Open. In fact, such has been Brooksby’s dominance that he is yet to drop a set, in the run up to the semis.

Interestingly, the youngster when quizzed on his favourite player and idol has no hesitation in mentioning the name of the 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal.

The Spaniard too was playing in Washington, but suffered a shock exit in the pre-quarters to South African Lloyd Harris in three sets.

“Rafa’s mentality and consistency is just so amazing for me to see. And how he’s done that for so long. I love the intensity and discipline he brings every time. Right now, I would say that my favourite player to watch is Rafael Nadal, because of the mental strength he has.”

“In each of his matches, you know that he will present himself and have the best possible performance. I think he is the best in that regard, so he is definitely the active player that I admire the most in this area,” Brooksby told Puntodebreak.

A few weeks ago, Brooksby also made the finals of the New Port Open on the grass of Rhode Island, before he was denied the title by former Wimbledon runner-up Kevin Anderson.

Moving forward, Brooksby will now lock horns against the Italian sensation Jannik Sinner in the semifinals of the Citi Open. The two players have never met each other on the ATP tour. Hence it will be interesting to see how this tie goes.

Regardless of the outcome in Washington, it is highly probable that the young American will break into the top-100 of the men’s ranking next week.
