Will Smith‘s long wait for his maiden Oscar award in the ‘Best Actor’ category was finally fulfilled when he won the prestigious award for the titular role in the movie ‘King Richard‘, the biopic drama based on the life of Richard Williams, coach and father of Venus and Serena Williams.

Smith had earlier received nominations on multiple occasions but could not go on to win the award. However, his moment finally arrived. However, despite winning the biggest award of his career, it was overshadowed by an ugly incident at the Academy Awards that took centre stage instead of his historic win.

Hosting the Awards was the famous comedian and actor Chris Rock who made some reference to Jada Pinkett Smith‘s hair loss comparing it to Demi Moore‘s shaved head in G.I. Jane. While the crowd enjoyed the dig as it is a common occurrence at Awards night, Will did not take it sportingly and went up to the stage and struck Rock across the face.

As Rock stood stunned there, Will kept on shouting, “Keep my wife’s name out of your fuc**ng mouth,” repeatedly as the entire room went silent for an unexpected moment. Chris did not however hit Smith back and after taking a moment to regroup himself, he said, “That was the greatest moment in the history of television,” grinding while getting a few laughs from the audience in attempts to cool down the situation as Will remained angry.

With Smith’s category’s winner was yet to be announced, many hoped that if the actor does indeed win the award and addresses the crowd, he will apologise for losing his cool. While he did win the ‘Best Actor’ award, he very slyly omitted Chris Rock from the entire speech but instead apologised to the Academy and other nominees and all present in the ceremony while thanking Venus and Serena Williams for allowing and trusting him with the role of Richard.

While many have given their opinions that Smith should have apologised to Chris as well for his violent action when it was just a joke, so far, the Oscar winner has yet not issued an apology statement and seems unlikely he will do as he felt that, in his place, he was right to protect his wife and family from getting joked about at the Oscars.
