Ana Konjuh vs Danielle Collins Preview
23-year-old Ana Konjuh has won one title on the WTA Tour which she won in 2015 and reached a career-high ranking of 20 in 2017 after Wimbledon. In San Jose, she was seeded number 4 in the qualifiers and eased through her two qualifying matches in straight sets. In the round of 32, Konjuh sealed an impressive win after defeating World number 52, Marie Bouzkova in three sets, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
In the round of 16, she stunned number 9 seed, Alison Riske, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Riske failed to break Konjuh’s serve even once while, Konjuh broke the American thrice to take the win. For the quarter-final showing, she blew away Chinese Zhang Shuai in a 3 setter in which she lost the first set but bageled Zhang in the third set to seal her path to the semis.
Danielle Collins is coming in playing great tennis. She won her first career title a couple of weeks ago in Palermo. She had no problem transitioning to hard courts, scoring a convincing first-round win over Shelby Rogers in straight sets.
It has been a pretty consistent season for the American so far, she has reached at least the quarterfinals in six of the 10 events she has played, accumulating a 23-9 win-loss record. She battled past Elena Rybakina in the quarter-final in a straight-set victory that must have felt like a 3 setter. Both the sets went to tiebreaks and Collins won both of them 7-6(5) and 7-6(4) respectively.
