Petra Kvitova is currently ranked number 13 in the world and is making her fourth appearance at the Olympic Games. She made her debut at the Olympics in Beijing in 2008 where she partnered with Lucie Safarova in the Women’s doubles, but they lost in the first round. In London in 2012, she played in the singles event and reached the quarterfinals where she lost to Kirilenko in straight sets. At the Rio 2016 Olympics, she finally won her first Olympic medal when she beat Madison Keys in the bronze medal match.

In Tokyo, Kvitova is seeded number 10 and will be looking to win another medal for Czech. In the first round, she triumphed over world number 92, Jasmine Paolini from Italy to win in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. She secured her place in the second round in just 70 minutes after winning 61 points compared to Paolini’s 44 points.

World number 62, Alison Van Uytvanck is making her Olympic debut in Tokyo. She reached her best singles ranking of 37 in August 2018. She has won four WTA Tour titles and one Challenger Tour title. After a long ankle injury hiatus and comeback, Van Uytvanck won her first WTA Tour title at Tournoi de Quebec in 2017.

Alison faced world number 309, Ivana Jorovic from Serbia in the first round in Tokyo. Alison took the win in 1 hour 26 minutes in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Van Uytvanck had an astonishing 12 opportunities to break Jorovic but was able to convert only 4 times. Whereas, Jorovic was successful in the one opportunity she earned to break Van Uytvanck.
