‘Let’s all laugh, he’s finished!’ Twitter goes berserk as Novak Djokovic fails to cross the opening hurdle on comeback at Monte Carlo

Novak Djokovic
In a rather surprising turn of events, World No.1 and tournament favorite Novak Djokovic fell short in his comeback match against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters. The Serb, who was just playing his second tournament of the year, lost the match in three sets 3-6,7-6(5),1-6.
Before this, Djokovic lost in the quarterfinal of the Dubai Tennis championship. This is the first instance since Tokyo 2021 where Djokovic has lost back-to-back matches. He looked very rusty right from the start and was very inconsistent on serve. Against his character trait, he got broken upfront in the first set and was on the backfoot all match long. He was struggling from the baseline and wasn’t able to set himself up for winners. He eventually lost the set 3-6.
He played a comparatively competitive second set but still wasn’t able to get free points like he used to get a few months ago. Fokina was playing clean tennis but a lapse in concentration gave Djokovic a break of serve which to his misery, he wasn’t able to capitalize. He got broken while serving for the second set and took the set to a tie-breaker. He brought his clutch gameplay when needed the most and won the tie-breaker against all odds.
But the Serb wasn’t able to carry the same momentum into the third set. He got broken in the very first game and looked completely out of place. Nothing went his away and after a solid hold from Fokina in the fourth game, there was no looking back. He won all the following games to serve a breadstick to Djokovic, winning the set 6-1.
