The Wimbledon fortnight is almost here, and the best tennis players in the world are all set to compete for the oldest and most prestigious tennis title in the world. This year’s Wimbledon Championships will be the 136th edition of the tournament, dating back to its inaugural year in 1877.
The game of tennis may have evolved over the years, but Wimbledon has never lost its traditional charm with its all-white dress code, lush lawns, and strawberries and cream.
As has been the case in recent years, seven-time champion Novak Djokovic will head into the tournament as the overwhelming favorite. The Serb, who is unbeaten at the Championships since 2018, boasts an enviable record at SW19. Newly crowned World No. 1 and likely top seed Carlos Alcaraz Garfia will be Novak’s biggest challenger.
World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev, who was barred from competing at the Championships in 2022, will rise to the top of the ATP rankings if he goes all the way and lifts the coveted winner’s trophy on July 16th. Other top contenders include Casper Ruud, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Alexander Zverev, who is looking to break into the Top 10 for the first time since his lengthy injury layoff, will be the dark horse.
The women’s side of the draw is a lot more open now, as has been the norm since the heyday of the prolific Williams sisters. The triumvirate of Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina, who are ranked No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3, respectively, will be the obvious favorites, not just because of their ranking but also because of their recent Grand Slam victories. Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who was runner-up to Elena Rybakina last year, will be a force to reckon with.
