‘Making the country proud’ Emma Raducanu to make her Billie Jean King Cup debut next month
Emma Raducanu
World No. 13 Emma Raducanu is all set to make her debut at the Billi Jean King Cup when she will represent Great Britain in the qualifiers next month. The 19-year old was named alongside Harriet Dart, Katie Swan and Sonay Kartal in a youthful team that will play against the Czech Republic in the qualifiers scheduled on 15th and 16th April.
The Brits will play the Czech on the claycourts of Prague and it could be a big challenge for them as with the inexperience in their side, playing on an unfamiliar surface could be difficult as Raducanu herself is yet to play on Clay as a Pro having come in limelight only after the 2021 Wimbledon and eventually the 2021 US Open where she won the major.
While the Brits have two simultaneous tournaments on Clay starting from 4th April on the Tour, the WTA-500 event in Charleston and the WTA-250 event in Bogota, they can get a little familiar with the surface before heading to Prague where they would need to put their best feet forward.
“We are looking forward to the challenge of playing the Czechs. Emma will be making her singles debut, although she was part of our teams in 2019 and 2020. Harriet and Katie have been an integral part of the team the last couple of years while I’m excited to give Sonay that experience for the first time.
“Every tie creates a unique pressure and intensity which I’m sure our players will thrive on and, even though we have a difficult challenge ahead against the Czechs, I have every confidence our squad will do themselves and their country proud,” said team captain Anne Keothavong as per the LTA.
Emma Raducanu yet to chose her first Clay event
With another poor outing at the 2022 Indian Wells Open, Emma will make a final run on hardcourts at the upcoming 2022 Miami Open before the Tour shifts its focus to the ‘Golden Swing’. With three events available for a player to chose from in the month of April on the Tour, Emma is yet to make the decision.
With the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers on 15th and 16th April, no tournament will be taking place during the week with the events in Charleston and Bogota concluding on 10th April and the next events, the WTA-500 event in Stuttgart and the WTA-250 event in Istanbul are scheduled from 18th to 24th April before the WTA-1000 Madrid Open starts from 28th April.
Having shown her capabilities on both Grass and Hardcourts, it is now Claycourts turn to see how Emma fairs on them as she looks to cement her place in the top tier of the rankings and continues to look for her first Tour title and second career title.
