‘Incredible’: Maria Sakkari secures her spot at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara after her Kremlin Cup win over Kalinskaya
Maria Sakkari
Maria Sakkari has been in scintillating form this season. Although her performances in other tournaments were just about par, the way she performed at the French and US Open is nothing short of extraordinary. After a forgettable outing at the Australian Open, Sakkari wasn’t looking very confident on the court.
However, she turned things around in the French Open. The supremely talented athlete defeated several top-seeded players and made her way into the semifinal of the marquee tournament. She was knocked out in a hard-fought encounter by Barbora Krejčíková who went on to win the finals as well.

Sakkari failed to deliver at Wimbledon where she was defeated in the second round, but she again delivered an astonishing performance at the US Open. Sakkari was able to reach the semifinals, but again she was defeated by a player, Emma Raducanu, who then went on to win the championship.
Sakkari then made her way into the finals of the Ostrava Open where she fell agonizingly short of winning the title. Now, at the Kremlin Cup, Sakkari is again putting up a memorable performance. Moreover, after defeating Anna Kalinskaya in the round of 16s clash, the Greek tennis star has secured her spot at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara.
On more than one occasion, Sakkari had mentioned the WTA Finals as a big goal. She is currently above the mathematically needed threshold placing 5th in the WTA Race overall. This achievement will give a lot of confidence to Sakkari who definitely has all the shots in the book needed to succeed at the highest level.
