Mats Wilander, seven-time Grandslam champion has also weighed in on the Novak Djokovic Visa situation. Despite the word that is going around regarding Novak Djokovic’s poor treatment by the authorities, Wilander believes that he has been treated like any other individual.
The Swede stated the fact that such treatment has been vented out to the world number one ranked player, is something which is almost unheard of. Wilander also opined that Novak Djokovic was not wrong in regards to his vaccination decision, and he would surely have reasons to support it.
Speaking on the treatment given to Djokovic, Wilander believes that this is the standard protocol which would be applicable to any other person.
“You are being treated as one more person. When they don’t let you enter a country they always isolate you in a room or a hotel and you have all the freedom to catch a plane back whenever you want. I do not believe that he is treated better or worse than any other citizen. What happens is that when you treat the number one in the tennis world as a normal person, it is something that has not been given for a long time,” said Wilander in an interview to Marca.
Mats Wilander backs Novak Djokovic’s to fight the decision
Mats Wilander backed Novak Djokovic and his decision to stay in Melbourne, until the final verdict was delivered. The Swede added that this was one way of winning the hearts of fans all over the world, and how desperate he was to play at the Australian Open 2022.
“I love that Djokovic made this decision. It is everything to me. It is the way to win over fans around the world, to prove how much you want to play the Australian Open, how much you love Australia and the tournament, how much you want to make history,” he said.
Nova Djokovic has to get vaccinated if he is to compete at Wimbledon and US Open. The two majors are expected to have the same vaccination protocols as Australian Open, which means that the Serbian could go without playing any of the Grandslams.
Mats Wilander stated that he would shocked if Novak Djokovic has to consider retirement because of his vaccination status, and the fact that he cannot compete against the world’s best.
“It gives me a bad body just to think that Djokovic could consider retirement because of this. He is a person who thinks about it and analyzes everything very well. Take great care of your body and mind to the fullest. I have a feeling that if they told you the vaccine is 100 percent safe, you would take it,” said Wilander.
“Maybe you can’t get vaccinated because of a medical problem, we don’t know. I cannot imagine that he retired because he cannot play the greats because he is not vaccinated,” he added.
