“Djokovic and Rafa look more vulnerable each year,” Tennis Legend predicts that a “young guy” will win the French Open 2021

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic

Tennis legend Mats Wilander is one of those few players who has dominated both the Australian Open and the French Open. The now fifty six year old World No.1 from Sweden has seven Grand slam titles to his credit, including three French Open titles.

Wilander seems to think that Stefanos Tsitsipas is the favourite to win the French Open. Stefanos Tsitsipas the current World No.5 has done his chances no harm by doing well in the tournaments leading up to the French Open. He has won the Monte Carlo Masters and then followed it up with a win at the Lyon Open.

Stefanos Tsitsipas is winning people over with the brand of tennis he is playing. Legend of the game Mats Wilder is a fan of his game, Wilder loves the forehand that Tsitsipas possesses, he called it a forehand better than the BIG 3’s. Wilder is of the belief that with each passing year the levels of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal are dropping. He seems to suggest that this year a young player like Stefanos Tsitsipas will win the French Open trophy.

Tennis is an individual sport and in this sport personal rivalries, their outcomes matter. Tsitsipas has in the recent past played a great match of tennis and beaten Nadal. Next time Tsitsipas will go on the court knowing he can beat Rafael Nadal if it’s on a hard court. But the same cannot be said about his equation with the No.1 player in the World, Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic has beaten Tsitsipas in their last four meetings. And leads the head to head 5-2. These two players have had three meetings on clay and Djokovic has won all the three times. In 2019 ATP Madrid Djokovic won in straight sets, 6-3 6-4. In the French Open 2020 Semi-final, Djokovic won in five sets  6-3 6-2 5-7 4-6 6-1. Last but not the least, Djokovic defeated Tsitsipas at the ATP Italian Open 2021, winning in three sets 4-6 7-5 7-5.  Stefanos Tsitsipas is at least a year out from being able to beat Novak Djokovic in a Grand Slam setting.
