Matteo Berrettini has been one of the standout players on tour this season. The Italian had a noteworthy clay court season, where he managed to reach the quarterfinals. He made huge in roads at Wimbledon 2021, where he reached the finals, losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets.

The Italian has continued his impressive form at US Open 2021, as he stormed into his third successive Grandslam quarterfinals. Berrettini defeated the German qualifier, Oscar Otte in four sets in the fourth round. The sixth seed won the first set, but conceded the second set. However, he came back in style, winning the next two sets to seal a spot in the last eight.

“It was an intriguing match, as I expected. Different court, tricky player. I wasn’t feeling really good at the beginning. I had to adjust to the conditions and it was a match that I knew I could win and it’s never easy when it’s like that,” Berrettini said.

Early in the fourth set, Oscar Otte had an unfortunate injury as he fell on the court. The German had problems with his wrist ever since, as he fought valiantly right until the end. Matteo Berrettini expressed sympathy for the German, and stated that it was not the best way to end the tournament.

Oscar had a great run and I told him that he didn’t deserve [to go out with an injury], but that’s tennis. It happened to me in Australia this year. It’s never easy but he can take a lot of good from this tournament,” he added.

Matteo Berrettini will now face the top seed and 20-time Grandslam champion, Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of US Open 2021. The Italian has been beaten by Djokovic in the quarterfinals of French Open 2021, as well as the finals of Wimbledon a couple of months ago.
