Elise Mertens has had an exceptional career, reaching a career-high ranking of 12 in 2018 and winning 6 titles on the WTA Tour, including one title this year at the Gippsland Trophy. Mertens played at the Silicon Valley in 2018 and 2019 where she was seeded number 4 and 3 respectively.

In 2018, she reached the semi-final while in 2019, she lost in her first match. This year-round in 2021, Mertens is seeded number 1 and has made it through to the semi-final. In the quarter-final clash, she rallied past Yulia Putintseva and although she won in straight sets, she was stretched in the 2nd set, with the tiebreaker score going up to 10.

Daria Kasatkina comes into this match after beating Caroline Garcia in the first round, despite being a set down. Then, in the quarter-final, she knocked out Magda Linette in a match that ended 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. While Kasatkina didn’t enjoy her time on the clay, she would be pretty pleased with her performance on grass, where she made the finals in Birmingham and the quarters in Eastbourne.

Earlier in the season, Kasatkina won two titles on the hard courts—Melbourne and St Petersburg. In the process, the 24-year-old has won 12 matches on the hard courts, which will aid her well in San Jose this week.
