Iga Swiatek
From reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open 2022 to conquering three WTA 1000 tournaments consecutively, Iga Swiatek has been having a Fairytale run. In view of that, here, we shall talk about 10 of the things she achieved at the WTA Miami Open 2022.
10. Iga Swiatek became the world’s No.1 player after her second-round victory
Swiatek’s 6-2, 6-0 victory over Viktorija Golubic on Friday night ensured that she will be ranked No. 1 on the WTA rankings on April 4th, the Monday after the tournament. In the process, she made history by being the first Polish player to accomplish such a feat. She also became one of the top ten youngest players to achieve the World No. 1 ranking.
9. She holds a career-high 17 match winning streak
It consists of 5-0 victories in the WTA 1000 in Doha, 6-0 victories in Indian Wells, and now 6-0 victories in Miami. It’s the longest WTA victory streak since Naomi Osaka won 23 matches in a row from August 2020 to March 2021, when the tour resumed.
8. She is also enjoying a 20 set winning streak
Iga Swiatek hasn’t dropped a set since losing the opening set to Angelique Kerber in the fourth round of Indian Wells, which she won 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, before winning her next three matches in straight sets and all six of her matches in Miami.
7. Swiatek hasn’t encountered a tie-break in her last 15 sets
Despite having such a long list of accomplishments on her resume, the Pole does not cease to have her fair share of success. The 20-year-old hasn’t faced a tie-break in any of her sets since the opening set of her 7-6 (6), 6-4 triumph over Simona Halep in the quarterfinals of Indian Wells two weeks ago.
6. The fourth woman to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’
Iga Swiatek defeated Naomi Osaka 6-4 6-0 in the Miami Open final on Saturday, becoming only the fourth woman in WTA history to capture the ‘Sunshine double’. The three women, who were able to achieve such a feat are Steffi Graf (1994 and 1996), Kim Clijsters (2005) and Victoria Azarenka (2016).
5. She’s now won ten more matches this year than others on the tour
Her victory over Osaka in the Miami final was her 26th victory of the year; with 16 wins each, Paula Badosa and Maria Sakkari are tied for second on the women’s tour.
4. She has won her last six WTA finals consecutively
She has been unbeaten in championship matches after losing her first career WTA final in 2019, including 2022 Rolland Garros (Grand Slam), 2021 Adelaide (WTA 500), 2021 Rome (WTA 1000), 2022 Doha (WTA 1000), 2022 Indian Wells (WTA 1000) and 2022 Miami (WTA 1000).
3. The First woman to win the first three WTA 1000 events of a year
Iga Swiatek has now joined Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki as the only players to win three or more successive WTA 1000 championships in a single season, having also won in Doha in February and Indian Wells in March. Wozniacki holds the record for the longest winning run in the WTA 1000, with five victories between the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011.
2. She is the youngest woman ever to complete the ‘Sunshine double’
Kim Clijsters, who was 21 at the time, was the youngest woman to accomplish the feat before Swiatek. The Pole is the third-youngest player to accomplish the feat, man or woman—Jim Courier and Michael Chang did it in 1991 and 1992, respectively, as 20-year-olds.
1. Iga Swiatek is the Second Polish player to conquer Miami Open
Iga Swiatek, 20, became the second Polish player to win the Miami Open with her victory over the four-time Grand Slam champion. The first time another Pole won the title was when Agnieszka Radwanska did it in 2012.
