Alexander Zverev’s sub-par start to the season continued with an early exit at the Indian Wells. The German ended last season on a high with a triumph at the year-ending ATP Finals. But since then, World No.4 has been on a barren run. He was in contention for the World No.1 ranking at the Australian Open, but that ended with an upset to Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round. This was then followed by a runner-up finish at the Montpellier Open, the lone bright spot in his season so far.

After a year on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, Borna Coric finally made a comeback at the Indian Wells earlier this month. The Croatian lost in his opener in the Californian desert but now has notched up his first win since his return to the tour. Coric defeated Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco 6-4, 7-5 in the first round in Miami to book a clash against Zverev in the second round.

Zverev will be the favorite coming into this match, but the German has been inconsistent so far this season. He is an aggressive baseliner with all the shots up his arsenal, but his second serve has been the weak point and Coric will be looking to exploit it and maintain his superior head-to-head against Zverev. But Coric’s lack of match practice might be the telling point. He is only playing his third match of the year and a clash against a top-5 player will be tough for the Croatian.
