Coco Gauff has had a mixed 2022 season so far. The American started off a high note with a semi-final finish at the WTA Adelaide Initernational 2. It was then followed by early exits at the Australian Open and in Dubai. She had a good outing in Doha, where she reached the quarter-finals in singles and clinched the title in doubles. After receiving a bye in the first round, Gauff began her campaign in Miami with a straight-set win over Qiang Wang, 7-5, 6-4.
Zhang Shuai finally put an end to her losing streak in Miami with clinical wins in her opening round. The Chinese veteran had failed to win a main draw match since 2017. Zhang received a walkover in the first round after her opponent Clara Tauson retired mid-way through the match with an injury. In the next round, Zhang notched up a stunning win over 24th seed Sorana Cirstea, 6-1, 6-1 to progress to the third round.

Primarily a prominent doubles player, Zhang Shuai is making her mark in the singles as well. Similar to Gauff, Zhang had an inconsistent season so far, with early exits in nearly all her tournaments, but the Chinese veteran makes it count when it matters the most. She had a good outing at the Australian Open before ending her title drought to triumph at the Lyon Open.
Considering the form of both the players, it will be a hard match to predict, as they might notch up dominant wins but also fall to uncanny defeats often. Zhang has more experience on her side, but with the crowd cheering for home favorite Gauff, it will be an uphill battle for the Chinese star. Guff will be the slight favorite to win the match on her home turf and progress to the pre-quartes.
