Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka

Four-time grand slam champion and former world no. 1 Naomi Osaka will face off with the soon to be world no.1 and French Open winner Iga Swiatek in the Miami Open 2022 finals. Defending champion Ash Barty is not playing this year due to her sudden and shocking announcement of her retirement as a Pro at the age of 25.

Osaka crashed out in the quarter-finals the previous year, losing to Greek player Maria Sakkari. The previous year the Polish player Iga crashed out in the semi-finals. This year, it has been a dream run for the Pole not only for reaching the finals but also for confirming that she will be the world No.1 when the tournament ends.

The Miami Open is one of the largest attended tournaments after the four Grand Slams. It is part of the women’s WTA 1000 circuit and has been won by former world no.1 Barty for two consecutive years. This will be the first win for Osaka or Swiatek in the Miami Gardens.

2021 was not a great year for Naomi Osaka. The Japanese tennis star revealed that she was in depression which took a toll on her mental health. The four-time Grand Slam champion also slipped down the rankings and had a hard time enjoying and playing tennis. Nobody could have imagined that she would recover and reach all the way to the finals of the Miami Open.

Osaka’s run has proved that the tennis player has the potential to cope and regain her mental stamina at such a fast pace. Fans only hope that she is in her best form to play in the finals and give a game worthy of being called the finals.

Swiatek was practically unknown and came under the spotlight when she won the French Open and also became the first woman in history to be the lowest-ranked woman to win the Roland Garros. There was no stopping her after that, as she only moved forward and never looked back. She is in her best form and is a strong favourite to win the title.
