Gael Monfils has had a poor season to say the least. After consistent losses over the year, Monfils has managed to gain some momentum, however, how long it lasts is yet to be seen. Consecutive Second and Third Round losses have plagued him, which he will look to escape at the Sofia Open. The former World No. 6, who has consistently under-performed, will be aiming to make a comeback.

Ilya Ivashka has faced quite the number of fantastic players this season and is playing a career best. After winning the Winston-Salem Open earlier this year, the Belarusian gave Italy’s Matteo Berrettini a run for his money in the Third Round of the US Open, forcing a deciding set which Berrettini eventually won. Ivashka also boasts a fantastic season record and may very well maintain his pace to advance to the quarterfinals at the Sofia Open.

Monfils is the second seed at the Sofia Open, but a poor season and inconsistent performances take away from him the apparent advantage. Ivashka’s superior season record as well as his recent victory over Monfils at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 are enough to pull off another upset.
