Muguruza comes into this round after getting a walkover from Victoria Azarenka. The Spaniard though did manage to beat Ann Li in the opening round. Interestingly, the two-time Grand Slam champion enjoyed her time on the hard courts in the first half of the season. Muguruza made the finals in Melbourne and Doha, before winning the title in Miami. Unfortunately, the 29-year-old hasn’t enjoyed her time in the past few months. Although she made the fourth round in New York, the World No.9 also lost early in Montreal and Cincinnati.
On the other hand, Hontama comes into this match after beating Shelby Rogers in the last round. Like her opponent, Hontama also got a walkover in the second round. Although the Japanese entered this competition as a qualifier, she managed to win four matches to make the quarterfinals. The 22-year-old has spent enough time on the hard courts this year, by playing multiple lower-ranked WTA events. Till now, Hontama has got 31 wins under her belt on the hard courts, as compared to nine defeats.
