Garbine Muguruza vs Elena Rybakina: Preview

Garbine Muguruza

The Spaniard got off to a fine start in 2021 by making three hard court finals and winning one, but lost her momentum on the clay courts of Europe. She was even beaten in the opening round of the French Open. That said, she is a much accomplished player on grass. It is not to be forgotten that she is a former Wimbledon champion and will be a threat on the lawns going ahead. Onto the tournament in Berlin, Muguruza had little trouble in dismissing Sorana Cirstea in straight sets in the opening round. The 27-year-old has all the ammunition to win the title in Germany this week.

On the other hand, the Kazak player is coming off a successful run on the clay courts of Paris. Along the way, she also knocked off Serena Williams in the fourth round at Roland Garros. Rybakina even managed to see off the threat of Shelby Rogers in three sets in the first round in Berlin. That said, she doesn’t have much experience of playing on grass and it will be interesting to see how she handles the challenge going ahead.

The Spaniard is a far more experienced player on grass in comparison to her opponent and that could eventually make the difference in this match. The 27-year-old also had a high serving percentage on her first serve in the opening round, and on grass that could be a crucial factor. While the Kazak player is coming into this tournament with momentum under her belt, she is likely to come out second best against a superior Muguruza.

Match Prediction: Garbine Muguruza should win in two sets.
