Naomi Osaka has been the hot topic in the tennis community in the recent week, after her controversial decisions sparked a lot of debate at French Open 2021. The Japanese star had earlier decided to avoid the press in Paris, but was fined heavily after her first round victory, as she failed to adhere to the rules. Just a few days earlier, Osaka withdrew from the French Open citing mental health issues, and she revealed that she was dealing with a long of anxiety after arriving in Paris.
Naomi Osaka has been criticized heavily in the past few weeks, but a viral clip from her conversation with Coco Gauff revealed her true identity. Coco Gauff broke onto the big stage in 2019, as a 15-year old, and made it to the third round of US Open 2019, where he faced defending champion, Naomi Osaka.
Naomi Osaka won the match in straight sets, but tried her best to console a dejected, Coco Gauff. This shows how humble the Japanese is, as she took a moment to respect Gauff’s incredible achievement at the age of just 15.
Naomi Osaka lets Coco Gauff take the limelight
Naomi Osaka convinced Coco Gauff to do the post-match interview with her. The entire stadium was behind the teenager, and there were a range of emotions on show that night. The conversation which led to Gauff doing the post match interview with Osaka.
Gauff: Are you sure? I’m going to cry.
Osaka: No you’re good, you’re amazing. You’re doing the on-court interview.
Gauff: I’m going to cry the whole way through.
Osaka: No, I think it’s better than going into the shower and crying … let people know how you feel.
Later in the interview, Gauff expressed his gratitude to Naomi Osaka for giving her this incredible opportunity. “I said no, because I knew I was going to cry the whole time. But she encouraged me to do it,” Gauff said.
“She’s been so sweet to me, so thankyou for this. Thankyou. Thankyou Naomi. I don’t want people to think I’m trying to take this moment away from her because she really deserves it, so thankyou,” she added.
Then, the Japanese added a few special words to praise the youngster, Coco Gauff and the American crowd.
“You guys raised an amazing player. I remember I used to see you guys,” she said. “I remember I used to see you guys training in the same place as us. For me, the fact that both of us made it and we’re both still working as hard as we can is incredible. I think you guys are amazing. Coco, you’re amazing,” she added.
