“Naomi Osaka is a superstar and one of the best” Daniil Medvedev praises the 4-time Grand Slam champion for her fantastic run in the Miami Open
Naomi Osaka and Daniil Medvedev
World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev came narrowly close to reclaiming the World No. 1 spot but failed at the final hurdle. Needing to reach the semi-finals of the 2022 Miami Masters, Medvedev lost in the quarter-finals to defending champion Hubert Hurkacz in straight-sets and will remain the 2nd ranked player for another tournament.
After his exit, Daniil was asked about his views on Naomi Osaka‘s rise once again to the business ends of the tournament after having had a difficult season in 2021 when she announced her ongoing battles with mental health issues. She remained absent for quite a while in the 2021 season and had a string of poor results that saw her move outside the Top-50.
As Naomi moves into the finals of the 2022 Miami Open set to take on soon to be Wrld No. 1 Iga Swiatek, she will move more than 40 places to break into the Top-40 of the WTA rankings. Medvedev was brutally honest talking about Naomi’s form as he said he does not know her personally but said he had massive respect for the 4-time Grand Sam champion.
“I don’t know her close as a person, so it would be tough for me to talk about it. I mean, I don’t like to talk about people, because what I see is going to be articles in the media. Sometimes when I cross her, which is, you know, you don’t know a person close enough. So I can only talk mostly about her tennis career, which is amazing. She won a lot of Grand Slams, she’s one of the best in the world.
“Every time she plays, I think stadiums are close to being packed or packed. She’s a superstar, a lot of contracts, a lot of attention, which is sometimes tough for her, as we see. But I think, yeah, she seems like a very strong person in her own way and definitely a strong tennis player. A lot of respect to her for what she’s doing,” said Medvedev as per reports of Tennisuptodate.
Daniil Medvedev to play next in the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters
While Naomi has a final to contest in Miami, Medvedev will have a break for a week before he proceeds to Monaco for the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters in his Clay debut for the season. Medvedev will have a homecoming as he has his own residence in Monte Carlo and will be in action along with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic who will also make his Clay debut for the season.
