Naomi Osaka was one of the show stoppers at the Met Gala 2021, the annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Celebrities from across various fields grace the event wearing their unique outfits based on the year’s pre-decided theme.
Naomi was one of the co-chairs of the event along with Timothee Chalamet, Billie Eilish and Amanda Gorman. The theme for this year’s Gala was chosen as ‘American Independence on which Naomi said, “For me, Americana kinda means a mix of all cultures and this dress and this look kind of represents my two backgrounds, Haitian and Japanese, so I was really glad I was able to incorporate it.”
From the field of tennis, many of the current and former stars were present at the red carpet event. Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, Naomi Osaka, teen sensations Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez were also present at the event while Canadian youngster Felix-Auger Aliassime arrived with his partner Nina Ghaibi.
“From idea to concept sketch to the making of the actual dress, this whole process was an amazing one. When we first heard of the theme “American” we thought of immigrants: they are what created America from the start and the blend of so many cultures and languages is what makes this country unique,” wrote Mari Osaka on her Instagram handle explaining Naomi’s dress.

“This dress and look is a representation of that as a blend of both our Japanese and Haitian roots; from the ruffles deprived of Haitian Quadrille dress to the obi of a Japanese kimono- the mix of cultures is something to be celebrated and enjoyed.
“Thank you very much for the opportunity to help create this dress, to everyone at Louis Vuitton and Nicolas Ghesquiere AND MOST IMPORTANTLY my adorable sister Naomi Osaka for being the absolute goddess to pull it off,” wrote Mari in her post.
