British tennis player Andy Murray lost in the second round of Wimbledon 2023 to World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas after a grueling 5-set encounter that lasted 4 hours 40 minutes. The match had its fair share of controversies, the most glaring of which is that the match was suspended for a day at a stage when Murray was leading Tsitsipas 2 sets to 1. Murray ended up losing the last 2 sets when they resumed play on Friday.
Many fans and tennis pundits alike were not happy with the disturbance of play in this match, along with so many other matches. They believe that suspending matches at crucial game moments like this causes the entire drama of the match to crumble down. Most fans were of the opinion that the Briton could have closed out the match had they been allowed to continue on Thursday.
One such individual is former British women’s tennis player and current Eurosport expert Laura Robson. “I do think Andy had the best chance to win if they carried on last night, and I’m sure that’s going through his mind right now because the break in play definitely changed things, the conditions changed things,” said Robson.
Robson claims that Murray’s best shot at winning was to finish it on Thursday night
Robson continued, “Maybe he just had more time to think about the win as well because it looked like towards the end of the fourth set in particular, they were starting to come off the ball, he was starting to play too softly at times, especially the forehand.”
Robson believes that the match suspension caused Murray to lose all momentum. He gave the edge to the younger, more athletic Tsitsipas. She finished by saying. “You never know, I guess. But I’m sure he’s thinking that he had the best possible chance last night.”
Murray’s opponent Stefanos Tsitsipas was all praises about the legendary player. “It’s never easy against Andy, I know. Everyone loves him here,” said Tsitsipas of the 2- time Wimbledon champion. “It was a very difficult game and I’m impressed how well he holds up after his hip surgeries and his level today. I wish him the best in the future.”
Tsitsipas will face Serbian Laslo Djere in the third round at Wimbledon. Tsitsipas has had a concerning amount of on-court time so far, playing 10 tough sets over two rounds. He will hope to make the best of his run this year at Wimbledon. As for Murray, the All-England Club misses him already and awaits his arrival next year.
