The Ukrainian tennis federation has lately faced ridicule on social media for sensationalizing the incident of teenage tennis player Mirra Andreeva liking a funny post on Instagram that supported the Russia-Ukraine war. The incident stems from Ukrainian player Dayana Yastremska’s plea to the WTA to sanction Andreeva after seeing the teenage Russian’s questionable social media activity.
Yastremska wrote on Instagram, “Recently, I asked that sanctions to be taken against Mirra Andreeva for having liked social media posts which clearly concerned the atrocities committed to Ukrainians and the WTA simply indicated it would not intervene.”
She added, “I am upset but remain committed to fight for my country, my family and my friends in Ukraine. I would like to give special thanks to Switzerland and tournament organizers for their warm reception.”
The Ukrainian Federation argues that Andreeva’s social media activity is enough evidence of establishing her pro-war sentiments, something they believe the young Russian ought to be banned for. The WTA has made its stance clear on the matter, stating that it will not intervene in this situation.
The incessant targeting and accusations hurled towards a girl as young as Andreeva claiming she supports the war, over something as trivial as liking a funny Instagram post, sounds just as ridiculous as it is. Tennis enthusiasts and fans have made sure to remind the Ukrainian federation of the same in what has been a barrage of comments.
Twitter users berate the Ukrainian federation
Twitter users were quick to lash out at the federation and any people aiming to defame Andreeva over the matter, stating that a 16-year-old girl should not have to face such a situation.
The WTA recently released a statement defending the Ukrainian players’ decision to not shake hands with their Russian counterparts. Believing this to be a personal decision, the WTA declared that acting on the players only due to their unwillingness to be friendly is not the right thing to do.
There is no denying that relations between Russian and Ukrainian tennis players have definitely deteriorated greatly owing to the war. However, most fans believe that cooperation between players can be achieved even without the customary friendliness.
