She recently announced her imminent retirement from tennis which left many of her fans heartbroken and emotional, Williams announced that she will be retiring from tennis after she competes at the ongoing US Open. The tournament at the Flushing Meadows is going to be the final one of her career.

Serena Williams started off her US Open campaign with a bang, she beat Danka Kovinic in the first round of the tournament in straight sets, and faced a tough challenge as she came up against world number 2 Anett Kontaveit in the second round but the 40-year-old American icon showed the tennis world why she is lauded as the GOAT of the game. Serena breezed past Kontaveit in three sets to make her way into the third round of the tournament.

Fans took to Twitter to react to Serena’s brilliant win over Kontaveit, being so close to retirement, most felt like Williams would likely be eliminated in the first round or the second of the US Open but the 23-time grand slam still continues to prove her haters wrong as she has stunned everyone and booked a place in the third round of the tournament.

One fan wrote, “WOW!!! 41 and taking no prisoners!! Where there’s a will there’s a way. Congrats to the GOAT!!!” fans are clearly excited to see Williams in action as she keeps putting in amazing performances in her farewell tournament. In her post-match press conference, Williams admitted to still having some life left in her as she keeps giving vague replies about her retirement.

After beating Kontaveit, Serena Williams will be facing Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the 2022 US Open.
