A recurring shoulder discomfort forces Iga Swiatek to withdraw from Berlin Open, hopes to recover for Wimbledon

Iga Swiatek

Iga Swiatek has dominated the WTA Field ruthlessly these past months, winning six consecutive titles including her 2nd French Open title in 2022. She is on a record-equalling 35-match win streak and was unphased by the change from hard court to clay as she continued stomping her opponents. Though switching from clay to grass is expected to be a lit bit more challenging for Swiatek, she was still expected to do well.

Swiatek would have liked to try herself on the grass before going into Wimbledon 2022. The Championships will be the second grand slam where Swiatek would be the top seed. She would’ve liked to gain some momentum on grass before she begins her Wimbledon campaign. She fell in the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021 and would definitely like to do better this year and perhaps even win her first Championship. But unfortunately, her first grass-court event of the season will be Wimbledon itself.

Iga Swiatek has announced on her Twitter account that she would not be able to play in the Berlin Open, which is held from 13 to 19 June. She wrote that due to recurring discomfort in her shoulder, she would not be able to play in Berlina and she will try to get some rest and be prepared for the Wimbledon starting on 27th June.

Fans were supportive of Swiatek’s decision to give her body some time, before jumping into another packed season. Wimbledon has increased the prize fund in an attempt to boost participation, which was expected to fall down as the Championships will not offer the participants any ranking points for their efforts. Swiatek would try to get her seventh consecutive title in London and get closer to the highest win streak post-2000.
