Andy Murray made a winning return in Madrid after his 6-3, 6-4 win over Dominic Thiem in the Madrid Open 2022. Murray won the title in Madrid in 2008 and 2015 but didn’t play on clay in nearly two years. It was Murray’s first clay-court win in five years. There was a lot of skepticism about Murray and whether he was capable of competing with the best after not winning on clay for a long time. Thiem too is on his own comeback journey and he is still to find his rhythm and confidence.
Dominic Thiem is one of the most dangerous players on the clay and his first-round exit meant that he still needed to recover, both physically and mentally. He has lost all of his first-round matches in the last three tournaments. Thiem needs some time to recover, and Murray understood the process all too well as he said some very motivating and empathetic words to Thiem after his win.
Dominic Thiem is thankful to Murray for his kind words
Murray encouraged Thiem with these words after his win in the match: “I hope you feel better soon mate. Keep Going. It takes a lot of time but you’ll be fine.”
Dominic Thiem understood the importance of time in the process of recovery from injuries and he was very appreciative of Murray’s words. According to the Eurosport Thiem said: “It was very nice, his words at the net, and it is worth even more from someone like him who really went through that recovery process. He is one of the few who knows how tough it is to come back after a major injury and obviously he is a role model with how he came back with his hip injury.”
Dominic Thiem would like to return to Rome and maybe even at the Roland-Garros, but given his current form, he might not be able to pose any problems for the players. It would take some time for Thiem to get back in the shape fans are used to seeing him while Murray moves forward in Madrid to set up a second-round clash with Denis Shapovalov.
