Wimbledon has made it into the headlines yet again. The grand slam experienced a lot of criticism for it’s poicy of banning all the Russain and Belarusian players due to the ongoing invasion of Ukraine from Russia and the support Belarus is providing to Russia.
The All England Club decided that to set an example and as a form of protest against the invasion to ban all the Russian and Belarusian players from competing at Wimbledon. However, ATP and WTA thought that the ban was unjustifiable.
Since, the players who were going to play the tournament weren’t actively supporting the invasion it is crazy to ban them just beacause they hail from the country where such activities were taking place. They failed to notice that there are millions of russians who are against the invasion and are protesting against the Russian government.
However, Wimbledon refused to lift the ban and was widely criticised by people from all over the world. Finally, ATP and WTA decided to take a harsh step of ripping off the ranking points from the tournament. This means that the ranking of players playing the tournament won’t be affected after the tournament.

Twitter reacts to Wimbledon’s comeback to ATP and WTA
Many players were a bit disinterested to participate in a tournament which won’t offer them ranking points when the tournament ends. Since, the winner of the tournament and the player who couldn’t win the first round will be awarded the same amount of ranking points which is zero.
Wimbledon retaliated to the decision by jacking up the prize money of the tournament by a whooping 11.1% from last year. The decision came to increase the popularity of the tournament and the interest of tennis players to come and participate in the tournament. The total prize money to be distributed at Wimbledon is 40 Million pounds.
After the decision came into public, Twitter reacted in both positive and negative ways. The All England Club was still criticised a lot for not agreeing to ATP and WTA’s terms and going with their own decision instead.
