“A young girl from Compton grows up to become one of the greatest athletes of all time,” Michelle Obama pays tribute to ‘Friend’ Serena Williams upon her retirement
Serena Williams and Michelle Obama
After dominating the circuit for more than 2 decades, Serena Williams‘ illustrious career has finally come to an end as she lost in the 3rd round of the 2022 US Open fighting Ajla Tomljanovic for a place in the 4th round. Playing in front of a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium, Tomljanovic held her nerve on the 6th match point to take a 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-1 win after more than 3 hours on the biggest stadium in the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
With many expecting a poor performance by Serena this year given she had played only 4 singles matches coming into the Grand Slam due to her year-long injury hiatus, Serena surprised everyone yet again as she reached the third round and defeated 2nd seeded Anett Kontaveit as well in the second round.
Michelle Obama congratulates Serena Williams on her ‘amazing career’
With tributes pouring from all over the world for Serena, former First Lady of the USA, Michelle Obama also took the opportunity to congratulate Williams on her stellar career and for being one of the biggest icons and inspirations all over the world. With Michelle herself being an activist, Serena‘s contribution as an athlete of colour is often considered one of her biggest achievements something that Obama has done for decades now.
“Congrats on an amazing career, @SerenaWilliams! How lucky were we to be able to watch a young girl from Compton grow up to become one of the greatest athletes of all time. I’m proud of you, my friend—and I can’t wait to see the lives you continue to transform with your talents,” tweeted Obama via her official Twitter handle.
With Serena now being part of the American culture and having promised to stay in tennis in some capacity, Serena‘s plans for the future will always keep the fans on toes to see how the 23-time major winner continues to stay in public life in the coming years.
