Adrian Mannarino reveals his unorthodox tequila recovery method after an impressive victory over Ben Shelton in the third round of the Australian Open.
The 35-year-old has proven how persistent he can be at the Australian Open after he defeated Stan Wawrinka and Jaume Munar in five-set thrillers and did the same against World No. 16 Ben Shelton.
After his victory, the Frenchman told the Australian audience that he takes tequila when quizzed about how he manages to recover fast after each long hour of matches, despite his age.
I started tequila. That helps to not think too much, you just need to keep going and sometimes you need to clear your brain and stop thinking about the past and just keep going. Don’t look back and just go.The 35-year-old Mannarino
The Frenchman victory over the American was his fifth win in 34 Grand Slam matches against a Top 20 player. Adrian has continued his fine form from last season, during which he shockingly won three ATP titles.
He will face the record Australian title winner, Novak Djokovic, in the round of 16 of the Australian Open at Rod Laver Arena.
Adrian Mannarino denies Ben Shelton a Novak Djokovic rematch
Adrian Mannarino needed five sets in a brutal four hours and forty-six minutes tie to overcome American youngster Ben Shelton from a 2-1 down to win 7-6(4), 1-6, 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4 in the Rod Laver Arena.
Many fans were hoping for a repeat of the US Open semifinals between Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic, but that was canceled out by the clinical 35-year-old. In a battle of the two left-handers, the Frenchman consolidated his victory in the fourth and fifth rounds with a double break that forced Shelton to drop serve from 40-0.
Throughout the game fans kept chanting “U-S-A! U-S-A!” but the encouragement was not enough for Shelton to pull through the difficult experience Adrian.
Adrian would face Novak Djokovic in a decisive round of 16 clash to see if he could cause more upsets. The Frenchman had earlier defeated Swiss Stan Wawrinka 3-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round, eliminating the 2016 Australian champion from the competition. He then went on to beat Spanish youngster Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-3, 1-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the second round.
During the on-court interview, Mannarino pleaded with the interviewer not to tell him who he was playing against, the same thing he did two years ago when he was eliminated by Rafael Nadal two days later.
The Frenchman is hoping that a good turn of form since last year could give him the needed edge when he gets to the court against his favorite, Djokovic.
